Foam Cut to Size: How to Measure and Which Foam to Choose

Replacing the foam in a seat, bench or mattress is mostly about two things: measuring accurately and choosing a foam that suits how the piece is used. We are a foam converter in Manchester and cut every piece ourselves.

Which foam?

Foam Density Best for
White 28 kg/m³ Softer. Back cushions, toppers and lighter mattresses.
Blue high density 33 kg/m³ Firm. Seat cushions, sofas, benches, window seats and van seating.
Memory foam 60 kg/m³ Moulds to the body. Toppers and pressure relief.

For anything you sit on every day, blue is usually the right choice. Our blue firm upholstery foam sheet comes in over 100 ready sizes from 1 to 6 inches thick.

How to measure

  1. Measure the space, not the old foam. Old foam shrinks and flattens with use, so measure the seat base, frame or cover instead.
  2. Length and width. Measure at the widest points. For a cushion going into a cover, many upholsterers cut the foam about 1 cm larger than the cover each way so the cover looks full.
  3. Thickness. Measure the depth of the cover or the space. A thicker seat feels softer and sits higher.
  4. Shapes. For curved or angled pieces, make a paper template and send us the measurements.

What we can cut

  • One piece up to 80 x 46 inches (203 x 116 cm).
  • Circles, rounded corners and bevelled edges on request.
  • Larger areas are usually made from two pieces butted together.

For a size that isn't listed, send us your measurements and we'll quote.
